Simon & Jackie’s wedding at Normanton Golf Club, Wakefield

After three or four days of torrential rain, I couldn’t believe it when I got up early Saturday morning to see clear blue skies and sun! All the more amazing when one thinks that on Friday 11th, the weather was absolutely dreadful and this was the orginal date that Simon and Jackie had set for their wedding, but in a twist of circumstances, the venue became available on Saturday 12th and so they switched dates and and weather fronts!!

They got married in front of a large congregation at South Ossett Christ Church before heading in style in a wonderful old Riley to Hatfield Hall aka Normanton Golf Club, Wakefield. As a photographer I find this is a tight venue for shooting, with wedding guests confined to a very slim margin around the club house and the members are very picky if anyone steps over the line. Even late into the evening, when the course was closed, we were being badly hassled by the management for standing on a gravel path just 3 yards over the ‘boundary’ line so that we could shoot some magazine style bridal portraits in front of the big vista. A bit mean methinks when the bit of grass the club ‘generously’ allow the couple to stand on was water logged after all the recent rain, meaning that anyone not in flat shoes simply sinks to the heels in the ground. If the club is prepared to take good money from a wedding couple, in my opinion they could be a bit more amenable about it all.

Hey! Enough of my grumpy old rants, let’s have a look at some images :¬)

The studio developments

Been very busy over the last few days trying to get the studio decorating done so that I can get it up and running. I have several shoots waiting in the pipeline so this is top priority at the moment. I’ve got half the floor laminated now and, hopefully, the rest over the next few days. However, with as couple of location shoots in the pipeline, including a ‘trash the dress’ shoot, it seems there aren’t enough days in the week to cope :¬(

Ryan & Jodie’s wedding at The Red Lion Hotel, Burnsall

Ryan and Jodie chose the Red Lion at Burnsall as the picturesque setting for their big day. The weather looked a little threatening early in the day but by the time the wedding was about to get into full swing, the skies cleared and the sun shone through. A combination of a brief ceremony and an intimate number of guests meant that we had ample time for some shots of the couple both around the Red Lion and also in the stunning landscape that surrounds it. It would be criminal to shoot a wedding in the Yorkshire Dales and not get some of the beautiful landscape into the images.

Toby & Franky hit the studio

Sounding like a couple of gangsters, Franky & Toby came round to the studio for a portrait for their grandmother’s birthday. A quick shoot on a white infinity curve gave us a great selection of images to chose from. It’s a while since I’ve done this kind of shoot, being in the middle of changing studios, but I enjoyed it and soon got back into the swing of it. It’s an amazingly simple set-up with just three studio lights. Last time I shot Toby he was only two weeks old – that’s him on the right.

Black Grouse Whiskey and free samples!

Good news today – I can now confirm that the images I took of black grouse in Scotland have been put to good use and are being used by the Famous Grouse whiskey company to promote their new brand ~ Black Grouse! It’s good to know that 4 days of getting up at 3am and climbing a Scottish mountainside in the dark during heavy snow, then sitting in a tiny canvas hide in sub-zero temperatures for 6 hours at a time was not all in vain! Although the brand is not available in the UK as yet, it will be soon, so look out for my images in the advertising campaign. In the meantime, I can show you the packaging and the sharp eyed amongst you will note that I have thoroughly tested the contents of the bottle from the free sample I was sent :¬o
