NEW College part 2

Back at NEW college in Pontefract again for part two of this year’s prospectus shoot to mop up the classes that we couldn’t quite squeeze in last week. The format was much the same, dashing from class to class with just a few minutes to assess the room and come up with a shot that depicts the content of the class. In addition to working in the classrooms, we also created a few shots around the campus and also in the common room and library. Here are a few more shots from this year’s college shoot :¬)

The Shaws in the studio

A couple of weeks ago, I got a call from Steve to see if he could arrange a gift voucher and suprise portrait shoot for his mum’s birthday which of course we did and tonight Steve came over with sister Becky and mum and dad for the shoot. They decided on a studio shoot rather than a location shoot and so we used a white infinity curve for some lifestyle shots and in just over an hour we’d done every combo of the group! A great opportunity for a candid snap arose when dad Gary’s cell phone went off just as he was striking a pose much to everyone’s amusement and his embarrassment. Here are a few shots from the session. To book me for your family portrait shoot. just call the studio on 01924 229800

GMB Union landscape commission

Over the past few weeks I’ve been working on a commission from the GMB Union regional office in Wakefield to shoot some artwork for the walls in reception. The idea was to come up with a theme that is representative of each of the regional offices in Yorkshire & Derbyshire so we decided to shoot a landmark building in Wakefield, Brighouse, Chesterfield, York and Sheffield. Choosing the buildings was reasonably straightforward, getting the images has been a whole different ball game! I always have an image in mind before I head out to a location and my vision usually includes dramatic lighting: After all, these images are going to go on a wall for many years so the shots need to have visual impact. However, the very poor weather we’ve been having over the past two months has really hampered my progress. Rain, wind and dull, flat light have just been the norm. Several times I’ve got up at dawn after seeing a reasonable forecast only to be confronted with grey skies and on several forays I’ve left my gaff in good light only to get soaked by the time I arrived at the location for a shoot. The perils of being a landscape photographer! Although the time is flying by and it seems at first hand easy to get six good images of buildings, getting them has proven difficult. Flat light shots are OK to accompany a magazine article or a for a project with a short life span, but there’s just no point in shooting an image in flat light when its going to be placed in a prominent viewpoint for years. Here are a few of the images I’ve done so far. I’m really hoping for a break in the weather to get these done as I also have a commission for Hanson Bricks of London to shoot some architecture images for their entry in the national building design awards :¬o

Garry & Michelle’s wedding at Woodlands Hotel

I have to say that despite the very grim forecast, we got away with it pretty lightly with Garry and Michelle at their wedding at St Saviour’s Church, Birstall and followed by the reception at Woodlands Hotel. Having said that, we spent the enitre afternoon shower dodging! No sooner had we got folks out than the heavens would open so a dash back into the conservatory only to find the rain had stopped as quickly as it had started! At least with a Woodlands Hotel wedding there is room inside for shots if the weather is bad and we did do some of the formal shots inside, but eventually we took the bride and groom out and used the doorways to shelter them while I took a soaking for a second time over the last couple of weeks, though it was nowhere near as bad as Louise and Rusell’s wedding day! While we were shooting the bride and groom, the guests were indulging in afternoon tea, comprising of dainty finger sandwiches and plates of equisite little cakes including gorgeous caramel eclairs which I insisted the bride should try but I hadn’t intended her to get it all down the front of the dress :¬) After a quick sponging down we went out into the grounds and, despite the flat light and rain showers, we got some great images. Here are just a few from the day.

Pre-wedding: Simon & Kate at Cold Coniston Hotel

This evening, I met up with Simon and Kate for a pre-wedding meeting in a chilly and very blustery park in Bradford! Simon and Kate are getting married at the end of the month at Cold Coniston Hotel near Skipton and I’m hoping for better light on the day! Although it was only 7:15pm when we met, the light was so low it felt more like 10:00pm! And, can someone explain why it is that the wind always blows from the wrong direction?! Anyhow, we had a laugh and a good pre-wedding shoot to give them an idea of what to expect on their big day and I think that once we had the initial nerves out of the way, everything went fine. Here are a few from the shoot, though I confess to having used a few levels adjustments in post to lift the images from the originals :¬)
