NEW College prospectus shoot

It doesn’t seem two minutes since I was last at NEW college but I was there again today as they kindly invited me back to shoot some images for their latest prospectus. This is the third year I’ve been at the college and it never gets any easier! The days are packed and it’s non-stop action dashing between classes to get the images and with each session lasting around 10 minutes, there’s little time to think about the shots. As we enter each class, it’s a case of determining the location for the shoot, working out the lighting and then singling out the ‘volunteers’ to be in the photo – often the hardest bit! When deciding how to light a shot, I base everything on a quick assessment of ambient, if there’s window light I might use that as fill or rim but often there is just fluorescent strip lighting – awful for the white balance but never enough time to balance the flashes to it with FLGs, so I usually just go with a daylight balanced flash in a softbox close in to the subject and try to over power the strip lights. Quite often I put a second flash somewhere in the mix either to light the background or give me a kicker. Shooting inside the traditional darkroom was a less of a challenge than I thought, as I just used a single remote speedlight at around 1/32 and gelled it flame red to match the safelights inside the darkroom :¬) The hardest shots always involve backgrounds comprising of projected images onto a whiteboard as the smallest amount of flash overpowers the projector :¬\

More from NEW college after next week’s return visit on Tuesday but here are a few from today.

Pre-wedding: Sarah & Ross at Kings Croft Hotel

Hot and sunny for the meet-up with Ross and Sarah at Newmillerdam today for a pre-wedding meeting and shoot. The place was humming with people and even a bridal party but fortunately the photographer had not got them in my spot! Ross and Sarah confessed to being apprehensive about having their photos taken but I’ve no idea why because I think we got some corkers and they look so very relaxed in front of the camera and with each other. Ok, I know its a baptism of fire being photographed in public at Newmillerdam on a hot and sunny Sunday afternoon with a gazillion folks wandering around, but hopefully, this will make the wedding photography at Kings Croft hotel next month a breeze! I’ve put my favourite shot first. Check out Sarah’s awesome eyes :¬)

Hannah & David’s wedding at Nostell Priory

Another week of heavy rain and a forecast of much the same for today’s wedding, backed up by the fact that it was pouring down when I got up this morning suggested another wet summer wedding! I’d resigned myself to having to shoot indoors at Hannah & David’s wedding Nostell Priory, especially as we left the groom’s house in Crofton and headed to Hannah’s mum’s house in Ackworth in steady rain. However, by the time Hannah was ready and in her dress, the skies had begun to clear slightly and I couldn’t believe that we never saw another drop of rain for the rest of the day! The day just got better as it went on with Nostell allowing us to throw confetti (because it was real dried rose petals), the skies clearing and Hannah not giving a monkeys about her dress getting dirty on the very waterlogged ground. Despite having enough dirt on the base of the dress to grow a good crop of Maris Pipers, Hannah never complained once as we shot in the rose garden and then down by the lake and in front of the house as dusk fell. Here are a few images from the day, so many to go at as ever but I need to get some on the blog before Hannah and David jet off to Kenya on Monday!

Roli: Headshots for LinkedIn

Roli needed a professional headshot image for her Linkedin profile so she gave me a call to see if I could knock one up for her in a bit of a rush. Within an hour of calling me, she was in the studio at Durkar and I had 10 minutes of shooting while the taxi sat waiting outside! Roli’s brief was for some informal headshots, nothing too ridgid but looking buisness like yet approachable.  For a few formal headshots though, a great deal of time is not always necessary but from experience. you should allow at least half an hour as the better shots always come towards the end of the shoot when the natural personality of the subject comes through as the nerves begin to fade. Katrina & Lee’s wedding at Worsley Court House

What a difference a day makes! Yesterday was so wet and even chilly and today, warm sunshine and  heat. Ok, we had the occasional threat of rain but nothing more than a few spots but that did bring with it some super dark skies. As Billy Idol once said –  “nice day for a white wedding”!  Katrina and her sisters, Gemma and Eleanor the bridesmaids, got ready at their mum’s house in Worsley before driving a short distance to the church at Bootham, after which we headed back to Worsley Court House for the reception. This is the second time I’ve been over to Worsley, the first being for the pre-wedding meeting, and I have to say it is really picturesque and a great location for a wedding. The canal makes a great backdrop to the photos and there are plenty of canal boats to jump aboard :¬) I have so, so many pictures to go through but I wanted to get a few up as a sneak peek before Katrina and Lee jet off to the Maldives on Wednesday. Lots more to come sometime in the near future and I’m so looking forward to the Love the Dress shoot!

To book me for your Worsley Court House wedding, just call 01924 229800 for a chat.

Lousie & Russell at Blacker Hall Farm

If ever I’ve done a wet wedding, today was the day! No let up whatsoever in the rain for Louise and Russell who got married at St Hilda’s Church, Horbury before moving on to a reception in The Barn at Blacker Hall Farm. All through the bridal preps I kept looking out of the window trying to convince myself it was easing up but to be fair, it was wishful thinking on my part! However, a bit of rain wasn’t going to stop us having a good time and getting some great images! We did most of the guest shots in the church itself, but then Louise and Russell grabbed some brollies and headed out into the heavy rain for a wet weather shoot. Special mention to Eleanor who braved the weather with us and carried the dress, held brollies and shouted encouragement despite getting soaked along with me. I hope Russell has got over the embarrassment of his surprise ride to church :¬)

Here are just a few from the day as I have a Manchester wedding to prepare for tomorrow, so need to recharge batteries and wipe down the gear!
